"Sunset" by Chip Ghigna
Oil on wood, 12" x 32"

Each Shadow Has Its Sunshine

Each shadow has its sunshine.
Each rainbow has its rain.
Each sunrise has its sunset
So it can come again.

Each songbird has its silence.
Each nighttime has its day.
Each thornbush has its rosebud.
Each December has its May.

Each beginning has its ending.
Each ending has its start.
Each comes and goes because it knows
It has a counterpart.

  1. So true, and so lovely and soothing too. I love the seesaw balance of this. It's a comfort to think about this, Charles. a.

  3. Lovely! And, as Amy said, so soothing, too. The perfect counterpart to your son's painting. :)

  8. Hi Charles! Great poem. I like Amy's "seesaw balance" comment. ("Nighttime" has a typo. Thought you would want to know!)

  10. I like this too, as Liz does, for the last day of school. We said goodbye to students yesterday, & those leaving for high school, while so excited, were also so sad. Thank you for the rhythm & careful rhyme, Charles, & the beautiful painting by your son.

  14. What a beautiful poem and so perfect for this time of isolation when people feel like there are shadows and it's POETRY MONTH. Love your poetry. Using them with my students grades 2/3.
    Take care.
